Mount Maunganui Guide
Conquer 'The Mount': Hike, Swim, and Soak Up the Sun Guide
Mount Maunganui, or Mauao as it's known in Māori, is an iconic landmark that dominates the Tauranga skyline. This extinct volcanic cone offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline, the city, and the surrounding Bay of Plenty. It's a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a range of activities from hiking and swimming to simply relaxing on the beach. Mauao holds significant cultural and historical importance for the local Māori iwi (tribe). According to legend, Mauao was a slave mountain who was rescued and brought to its current location. The mountain is considered tapu (sacred) and is treated with respect. Over the centuries, it has served as a strategic lookout point and a place of spiritual significance. Today, it remains an important symbol of identity and heritage for the Māori people. The most popular activity is hiking to the summit of Mount Maunganui. There are several trails to choose from, ranging in difficulty from easy to challenging. The most common route is the well-maintained track that winds its way around the base of the mountain. For a more strenuous climb, take the direct summit track. Once at the top, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views. Other activities include swimming, surfing, sunbathing on the beautiful beaches at the base of the mount, and exploring the charming town of Mount Maunganui, known for its cafes, restaurants, and shops. While not unique to Mount Maunganui itself, the Bay of Plenty region is known for its kiwifruit, so be sure to try some fresh kiwifruit or kiwifruit-based products.
